Former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell will be making her first solo singing performance at the Prince of Wales' 50th birthday party on Wednesday night.
Ms Halliwell, who has recently signed a solo record deal, will perform her own version of Happy Birthday - before being joined by other stars on the bill at London's Lyceum Theatre.
Prince Charles' comedy hero, Spike Milligan, is also in the line-up for the party, called A Royal Celebration.
Joining him are Robbie Williams, M People, Roger Moore, Stephen Fry and Clive James.
As well as performing her first solo song, Halliwell will be appearing throughout the comedy and entertainment spectacular.
It is being held to help the Prince's Trust's work with disadvantaged young people.
Although she now sports a more demure look, she caused a stir by squeezing Charles' bottom when the Spice Girls met him at a Prince's Trust show earlier this year.
Sold off Spice Girls outfits
She quit the group in May and has since sold off her Spice Girls outfits for charity.
Before signing a new recording contract she took part in a breast cancer awareness campaign.
She was recently made a United Nations goodwill ambassador to promote education about Aids and contraception.
Her performance will have echoes of Marilyn Monroe's performance of Happy Birthday for President Kennedy.
The show, is being filmed by Carlton for a two-hour special to be broadcast on ITV on November 14 - the date of Charles' 50th birthday.
Geri Halliwell has been reunited with Spice Girls collaborators Absolute for her first solo project.
The team of Paul Wilson and Andy Watkins, who have co-penned and produced songs including Too Much for the Virgin act, are working on new material with Halliwell. A single and album are due in the first half of next year.
EMI Records last week confirmed it had signed a long-term deal with the singer, who will be handled by EMI/Chrysalis and whose releases will appear on the EMI label.

KING: We'll be back with the head of the Spice Girls, who isn't there anymore, Geri Halliwell is now the United Nations' goodwill ambassador. She's in New York. Look at that beautiful face. She's next.
Don't go away.
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
KING: Joining us now from New York is former Spice Girl -- indeed, she was considered head of the Spice Girls, Geri Halliwell. They're still the Spice Girls, but she isn't one of them. She is now on her first day as U.N. goodwill ambassador.
GERI HALLIWELL, U.N. GOODWILL AMBASSADOR: Hello.
KING: Hello, Ger.
She will use her fame and fortune to promote safe sex in the Third World. Why did you take this?
HALLIWELL: I just felt very privileged and proud. I was offered it about a month ago, and I gave it lots of thought. And, you know, I think in life, I think we can make a difference. And, obviously, this is going to give me a louder voice to do that.
KING: And were you surprise -- you're what, 25 years old, right?
HALLIWELL: I'm 26.
KING: Were you surprised -- I mean, Audrey Hepburn had this kind of post -- that you were offered it so young?
HALLIWELL: I was very, very surprised. I am very, very flattered.
KING: Do you think you might also help with Afghanistan, with what we were just talking about?
HALLIWELL: I was watching. I tell you what, the Lenos have my utmost respect. I think it's brilliant what they're doing. I mean, one thing I said the other day when I was at the press conference is, I am just basically trying to use my fame to bring awareness to a cause that I believe in. And that's what they're doing, so they have my total admiration, and respect in them.
KING: You're also involved in the fight against breast cancer, why?
HALLIWELL: Well, there's a bit of a story there. When I was 18 years old I had a lump in my breast. And, fortunately, it was benign and it was removed, but it really wasn't my wake-up call. It wasn't until many years later, last year, that a "Sun" newspaper -- that's our tabloid over in Britain -- did a story on me. And I decided to make something positive out of it, you know, and go with an awareness thing with it.
And I did my -- this is a discovery more about the disease, and I was absolutely horrified of the statistics and I thought -- I am meant to be an advocate of girl power. You know, I have a duty to talk about this. So this year I went to Holloway Prison (ph) in England, which is a female prison, and a girl's school to try to say "Well, actually, breast cancer doesn't alienate anybody."
And I learned something from it. There was a Jamaican lady in there and she said the only reason why she'd done something about the lump in her breast was because her life had stopped. You know, she'd gone to prison. You know, so many women are so busy being mothers, working...
KING: Yes.
HALLIWELL: ... out there. They're so busy taking care about everybody else.
KING: Do you ever fear a return? I mean, it was benign, thank God...
HALLIWELL: Oh, yes, absolutely. There's always a looming threat, not just for me, for many women. It's one in nine, one in 12.
KING: Geri, a lot of bases to cover. Why did you quit?
HALLIWELL: Why did I quit what, Larry?
KING: The foundation for the arcane -- no, why did you quit the Spice Girls?
HALLIWELL: Why did I quit the Spice Girls? I understand the question totally. And, you know, as I said in my press statement, there was differences between us. And those differences, I have to say, are personal differences. And, you know, if you want to probe into them -- you're going to have to respect for now -- I think we should leave, you know, the memory of the way the Spice Girls was, you know, a very spirited and good one.
KING: How do you explain -- this is fair -- their -- their and your participation in their success? Where you were Ginger Spice and Scary Spice and Baby Spice and Posh Spice.
HALLIWELL: Yes.
KING: Why did the world, especially young ladies, react to that?
HALLIWELL: I just think it was the spirit, the enthusiasm, you know, the attitude, that -- you know, that no matter where you came from, you know, you can do anything, basically.
KING: Was it someone's idea? HALLIWELL: No. It was -- you know, five girls' idea. It was five girls that came together and, you know, realized that we had a -- the same common ground. And that was, you know, an attitude that we could achieve something together.
KING: Your involvement with Prince Charles -- you're going to sing happy birthday at his birthday -- his 50th birthday. We see you pictured with him now.
How did that start?
HALLIWELL: Well, apparently, he requested my appearance at his -- his party, celebrating his 50th birthday. And I am going to be presenting the show, which is rather nice.
KING: His sons are big fans, right?
HALLIWELL: Yes. I believe so, yes. I think Charles is, too.
KING: Are you going to continue as a single act? There was a story in the paper that you signed a major deal with EMI Records.
HALLIWELL: Yes, I am. I am a great lover of pop music. I think music is a fantastic mediator and a good escapism. So, I will be so, yes. And I'll have an album out next year.
KING: What kind of songs?
HALLIWELL: Well, you know, I'm a real traditionalist, and I love good songs that everyone can sing along to. They have lots of flamboyancy and good melody, so I think even you might be singing along to them.
KING: With -- why do you mean "even you?"
HALLIWELL: Even you and the ball.
KING: Were the Spice Girl talents? Were you all good singers, or not -- you know, people made fun of that they weren't a talent.
KING: I mean, what is a good singer anyway. At the end of the da -- my personal belief is, so long as you have something here and, you know, singing is about expression, you know, and heart, so and -- I think, you know, I have that and the Spice Girls had that, and that's good enough. We're not claiming to be Barbra Streisand, you know. I'm just, you know, being a creative expressionist.
KING: The singer, the album -- you are Geri Halliwell, back to your name now, right?
HALLIWELL: Yes, absolutely.
KING: No more Spice identification now at all?
HALLIWELL: Well, I had to leave it behind with my former colleagues. And that's fair enough. Ginger Spice is a nickname put on to me by a magazine, which was great.
KING: You liked it?
HALLIWELL: Yes, it was fine. You know, it's still part of me. It's always going to be there.
KING: Well, you could be Ginger Halliwell, couldn't you?
HALLIWELL: Oh, I could be, indeed. I think I am Geri, fundamentally. But I think Ginger is still there; that wicked streak in me that will...
KING: Are the Spice Girls still singing, by the way; are they still working?
HALLIWELL: As far as I know. You'll have to get them on here.
KING: We'll take a break, and we'll come back with more and take some phone calls for Geri Halliwell. A lot happened in her life. The former Spice Girl is goodwill ambassador for the United Nations. Here's the Spice Girl's biggest hit ever, "Wannabe."
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP, "Wannabe")
SPICE GIRLS (singing): Yo, I'll tell you what I want, what I really, really want. So tell me what you want what you really, really want.
I'll tell you what I want, what I really, really want.
So tell me what you want, what you really, really, really want.
I want a...
Hut.
I want a...
Hut.
I want a...
Hut.
I want a really, really, really, really want a zigga, zigga, ah.
If you want my future, forget my past.
If you want to get with me better make it fast.
Now don't go wasting my precious time. Get your act together, we can be just fine.
I'll tell you what I want, what I really, really want. So tell me what you want what you really, really want.
I want a...
Hut.
I want a...
Hut.
I want a...
Hut.
I want a really, really, really, really want a zigga, zigga, ah.
If you want to be my lover, you got to get with my friends. Make it last for ever, friendship never ends.
If you want to be my lover, you have got to give. Taking is too easy, but that's they way it is.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
KING: As we come back, we see the Spice Girls with Prince Charles, and as he approaches you, Geri, you suddenly pinch him in an unusual place. What prompted that?
HALLIWELL: Do you know what? I was actually -- last week I was sitting on my couch. I was sitting talking to my sister, and I really can't believe I did that. I don't know what possessed me, you know.
KING: I mean, it's the next king of England.
HALLIWELL: I know. It's just one of those spontaneous moments, and I forgot who he was, and who I was.
KING: And he still wants you, though, at the birthday party, right? So it can't be that bad.
HALLIWELL: He does. He kind of -- yeah.
KING: Winnipeg, Manitoba -- hello.
CALLER: Hi Larry.
KING: Hi.
CALLER: I'd like to ask Geri, with her new position as the U.N. ambassador, will she be traveling to different countries to speak on her personal beliefs and everything?
HALLIWELL: First and foremost, I'll be trying to make awareness in the U.K. about Third-World countries -- how they're denied basic rights, you know, education on, you know, health and reproductive care. But I will -- I have just been in Uganda, actually, and it was really fantastic learning experience. That was for Comic Relief. And I went to a camp where they teach women to read and write, and it was just fantastic, because -- just things that we take for granted, I know, getting on the bus, you know, knowing where to go, or reading a pharmaceutical bottle, you know, taking the right amount of tablets, just things like that, it was just so fantastic and enlightening. So I will be traveling a lot.
KING: And obviously since they asked you to do this, Geri, they must be -- the U.N. is pretty progressive, pretty aware that people hold you in high regard, and a lot of women in the world hold you in that -- give you that feeling. Do you think that when you were a Spice Girl, and now, that you were a symbol?
HALLIWELL: I think -- you know, I'm just very honest about who I am and what I feel, and, you know, I think I reflect, you know, what -- how a lot of women feel today. Maybe they just identify with me. That's all.
KING: Because someone said that two of the Spice Girls were with child out of wedlock...
HALLIWELL: Yeah.
KING: ... do you think that hurts the image?
HALLIWELL: Oh, absolutely, I don't think there's any comparison. You know, what I'm trying to -- is educate, which is prevention. This is about pro-choice -- you know, contraception is about pro-choice. And at the end of the day those girls are old enough to make their own decisions, and they're in completely different situations. We're talking about women in Third-World countries that are having, you know, 10 babies because they haven't got enough money to...
KING: No, but you don't think it hurts the image of -- that was projected for so long, of for young women?
HALLIWELL: Not really.
KING: OK. That's fair. New York City -- hello.
CALLER: Hi. I was just wondering, Geri, if your U.N. thing doesn't work out, or your record deal, would you ever consider going back to the Spice Girls?
KING: How old are you caller? Caller?
CALLER: Yes, I'm 15.
KING: 15.
HALLIWELL: You're 15. Hello. That's a very interesting question, you know, and I'm very optimistic, and I -- I'm going to do my best with this U.N. job, and, you know -- and try and really make it work, and hopefully, you know, my solo career will make it work, and, you know, sometimes you have to move on and go forward. I, you know -- I don't really think that I'd go back to the Spice Girls, but you can never say never, but... KING: As we go to...
HALLIWELL: I don't -- as -- at the moment, I don't think so.
KING: I would say the betting is nil. We'll come back with our -- more moments with Geri Halliway -- Halliwell, the United Nations' goodwill ambassador, the former Ginger Spice. This is Larry -- well, she's still Ginger -- the former -- we'll be right back. Don't go away.
(COMMERCIAL BREAK)
KING: Bell Plains. Hello.
CALLER: Hi, Larry. I have a question for Ginger Spice.
KING: Go ahead.
HALLIWELL: Hi.
CALLER: I wanted to ask ginger if she still talks to the other Spice Girls, and what she thinks about their great U.S. tour.
HALLIWELL: I think the Spice Girls worked very, very hard, you know, going through America. I have spoken to Victoria over the summer.
KING: And?
HALLIWELL: And I think, you know, well done -- I actually do envy the girls going through America. That's something I would like to do maybe next time, maybe next year.
KING: Geri, do you miss anything about being with them? I don't want to get into why it broke up. That's your business, not my business.
HALLIWELL: Yes.
KING: But are there things you miss?
HALLIWELL: Obviously, I would have loved to do the American tour. That would have been really nice, to get -- because I have only really experienced L.A. and New York. So I don't think that's the real sense of America. I mean, there's 51 states and I really would like to take that all in and meet all of those different kinds of people, because I think individually they're like separate countries almost. And, obviously, I didn't do Wembley Stadium. That would have been quite nice, but...
HALLIWELL: Yes. Orlando, hello.
CALLER: Even though you have left the Spice Girls, are you still going to carry your message to the U.N.?
HALLIWELL: Absolutely. I think I am taking this one step further, you know, I was the -- said to be the evangelist of "girl power." You know, this is just empowerment of women, really. We're talking about reproductive health care. That's about contraception, and so it's just a more grown-up version of that.
KING: Why do you think -- this is just a microcosm tonight -- why do you think younger girls liked you so well?
HALLIWELL: I think, the Spice Girls are very animated, very digestible. And I remember when I was young, I had madonna. I think everybody likes somebody to look up to, and copy, and sing along to. So, it's very natural.
KING: You're not surprised at that, then?
HALLIWELL: Not really. You want something to connect with, don't you? I think there wasn't very many girl groups out at the time. And you know, we just had a lot of energy.
KING: Yes. Toronto, hello.
CALLER: Hello, Geri.
HALLIWELL: Hello.
CALLER: Hi. I am a really big fan of yours. And I was just wondering, when you publicly announced the breakup from the Spice Girls, did the media react to it the way you thought it would or did you expect a more discreet or elaborate reaction?
HALLIWELL: I have to say I was very surprised at the media reaction.
KING: In what way?
HALLIWELL: I just couldn't believe the interest and the big outcry. Anyone would think -- I don't know -- someone a bit more important was...
KING: Are you saying that the group was larger than you thought they were?
HALLIWELL: Absolutely.
KING: The story was bigger.
HALLIWELL: Believe me. I didn't think my departure was that big of a deal that it was. The news coverage that it got, really did surprise me. I saw it on Sky (ph) every 15 minutes.
KING: In retrospect, why do you think it was that big?
HALLIWELL: Maybe there was nothing else on the news that day. I don't know. Who knows.
KING: Are you anxious to get out working again? HALLIWELL: Oh, I mean, to be honest, I have been working the last few months. I have, you know, been regrouping. I have been working alongside the heads of cancer charities in America and Britain, so I haven't been sitting on my back side completely.
KING: And finally, what about marriage?
HALLIWELL: About marriage? Are you proposing, Larry? You're just gotten married and having a child, congratulations.
KING: Thank you, thank you.
KING: What about you?
HALLIWELL: About me? I am young, free and single at the moment. Why? Did you hear a rumor?
KING: Thank you very much, Geri.
HALLIWELL: Thank you very much, and hello America.
KING: Congratulations. Geri Halliwell, the former Spice Girl, her first appearance on television since assuming the role of U.N. Goodwill Ambassador.
I am Larry King in Los Angeles.
Geri takes on Fab Four in charts battleGERI Halliwell is to take on the Spice Girls after signing a £2million record deal.
The artist formerly known as Ginger Spice has pulled out of the Fab Four's label Virgin and will release her first solo album with Chrysalis Records.
She is thought to have picked Chrysalis after seeing Robbie Williams' career take off there. He signed a similar deal after quitting Take That. Geri, 26, has told pals she is delighted and can't wait to start work. It is thought her contract will be for three albums.
The news will surprise the music industry. Many believed Geri would quit pop for a TV career.
Geri left the Spice Girls in May during their European SpiceWorld tour. She travelled the world, ending up at George Michael's home in the South of France.
Her Spice contract prevented her from announcing any new career moves for three months.
But now she is set to announce her signing to Chrysalis next week.
A source close to Geri said: "She's thrilled about going solo. She's been keeping all her plans top secret up until now and left everyone guessing.
"People thought she'd move into TV or films but Geri decided she can go it alone in pop.
"She felt it would be impossible to remain with Virgin while her former Spice pals were still signed to them.Geri Launch Breast Cancer Awareness Campain September 29 1998 from MTV

GERI'S 1M DRESS SALE August 21 1998 from The Sun
By JENNY EDEN and SARAH CROSBIE
THESE are the dresses Geri Halliwell hopes will raise a fortune for charity.
Pop collectors are expected to pay tens of thousands of pounds each for the former Spice Girl's revealing outfits.
Hottest lots will include a stunning white number with plunging neckline which Geri nearly slipped out of at last year's Royal Variety Performance.
Among others expected to swell the coffers at the Sotheby's rock and roll memoribilia auction are a revealing Stars and Stripes outfit, a cheerleader mini dress and her famous Union Jack number - which she wore at the 1997 Brit Awards.
The fabulous gowns have been in storage since Geri, 26, quit as Ginger Spice in May.
A pal of the star said: "Geri is selling this stuff off because the Spice Girls is very much part of her past."
The pal added: "The sale underlines the new beginning for her." The auction is expected to make 1MILLION for Geri's good causes. But in a curious twist the remaining four Spice Girls will tonight claim on telly that THEY are planning to flog Geri's old dresses in the pop sale of the century.
The band - whose hits include Stop, Wannabe and Spice Up Your Life - have said they will make an announcement about pop's sexiest jumble sale when they return to Britain from their world tour in September.
And tonight on BBC2's O Zone presenter Jamie Theakston will be seen asking the girls if they plan to auction off Geri's outfits now she has gone.
Mel C replies: "We have talked about it.
"It would be a good idea to raise money for good causes. We do a lot for charity."
Geri is following in the footsteps of Princess Diana by auctioning off her most famous outfits.
Diana sold 79 of her stunning designer dresses and raised 3.8million for her favourite charities at Christies in July last year.
Geri and George Duet Rumour August 19 1998
According to the highly reliable (NOT!!!) Mega Star tabloid George Michael is about to make an album of duets with some of the biggest female stars, such as Lisa Stansfield, Mary J Blige and Aretha Franklin. And of course there are also "sources" quoted saying he will also do a duet with Geri.
DEAR GERI, SO SORRY YOU'VE QUIT August 14 1998 from The Mirror
By JANE KERR, Royal Reporter
Prince Charles sent Spice Girl Geri Halliwell a letter when she quit saying: "The group will not be the same without you."
Charles even joked he would miss her "wonderfully friendly greeting" - a reference to her bottom-pinching and kisses when they met.
The note, on headed St James's Palace paper, read:
"Dear Geri,
I wanted to drop you a line to say how sorry I was to discover you had decided to leave the rest of the Spice Girls. I suspect I am not the only one to feel sad either!
The group certainly will not be the same without you and what will I do without your wonderfully friendly greeting in the future?"Above all, I really wanted you to know how deeply I'd appreciated your great generosity to my Prince's Trust and how much I wish you well for whatever the future holds. Take care of yourself. With lots of love from Charles.
Charles met the Spice Girls several times when they performed at concerts for his charity, which helps disadvantaged youngsters set up in business.
Earlier this year he invited them to tea at Highgrove with Prince Harry and even attended the London Premiere of their Spice World movie. Charles's spokesman confirmed the letter had been sent to Geri on July 1. He added: "It reflects the prince's genuine feelings.
"If it wasn't for Geri and other pop stars giving their time to help the Prince's Trust we wouldn't be able to help so many people."
Geri said yesterday she was "really touched" by Charles's support. It comes days after she was attacked by the remaining four Spices, who are not believed to have received letters.
Baby Spice Emma Bunton said: "On the promotional side Geri was a very good talker. I wouldn't like to say she didn't enjoy performing but..."
Posh Spice Victoria Adams chipped in: "It wasn't her strongest thing."

Viva Forever #1 and Geri's whereabouts
![]()
The Viva Forever single entered the UK straight in at number 1. Outselling the #2, Will Smith, four times.
This has been interpreted as proof of the success of the remaining four Spice Girls, depsite the fact that Geri co-wrote the song, her vocals feature on the single, especially the live extra tracks (If You Can't Dance with her Spanish rap, and Say You'll Be There), her picture is still in the cover art and the poster accompaning the single, as well as in the interactive video that also comes with the single.
The four girls celebrated by popping champange and making snide remarks. Victoria is quoted as saying "Geri hardly sang at all on Viva Forever. She didn't do much on it." Well, look who's talking.
In the meantime Geri is in LA, reportdly to talk to movie agents. And of course she is staying at George Michael's Beverly Hills mansion.
And apparently an official (!) spokesman for Geri spoke about her future plans, but don't hold your breath cause all he said was that she has gotten a lot of offers and hasn't decided on anything yet.info from The Sun and The Mirror July 27, 1998
Here are some of the things Geri talks about in the Marie Claire magazine:thanks a bunch to Nuqdek Rob for typing this in for me :)
no one is satisfied with their body, everyone wants to change part of them, how she isn't happy with her body, there is nothing wrong with self improvement, shouldn't be predjudiced, she has tried everything to loose weight, food has got a lot to do with love and can be an emotional thing, what papers said about her weight, learnt a lot from her cancer scareSome quotes:
"I learnt a lot from the cancer scare I had when I was eighteen. I had to face the possibility that even though I was young, fit and healthy I could have had my breast removed. We should treat our body with the respect it deserves."
"We only truly evolve when we remove the layers we hide behind: the make-up, the hair, the image"And finally some questions and answers:
- favourite food
Garlic or sushi
- favourite tipple
Sherry
- favourite form of relaxation
Going out for a nice meal and chatting
- favourite holiday
Half of me would like just to lie on a beach and do nothing. The other half would like to climb the Peruvian mountains, the Himalayas or something.
- where would you like 2 be in 10 years
All I know at the moment is that the future ia all about my imagination
- who is the sexiest man u know
I think there are sexier women than there are men
- who was ur first love
My first love was George Michael - I used to snog a poster of him on my wall. I thought I was going to marry him. I liked his turned-up nose.
This is a pretty ridiculous rumour from a totally not reliable source, but I thought it was funny, so I mention it here anywy.
MADONNA TRADES FAME FOR LOVE, THEN LOVE FOR SPICE
Madonna reportedly scrapped plans to perform a duet with Courtney Love at the 1998 MTV Music Video Awards. After agreeing to the Dolly Parton/Kenny Rogers number "Islands In The Stream" just days ago, Madonna and Love had a heated arguement over who would get to perform Dolly's part. Insiders say that Madonna then dumped Love and replaced her with ex-Spice Girl Geri (Ginger Spice). In return for the favor Madonna has offered Geri a back-up-singer job for her 1999 World Tour.
<TheMicrosoftNetwork> LittleCow9 I noticed that Geri had associated with you after she left the Spice Girls. She recently went to your birthday (Happy Birthday), my question is how is she. I've seen pictures of her "new look," but I'd like your opinion on what do you think of Geri now? Also how is she feeling emotionally? Thank you for your time. PLUS would you lthanks to Geri_Love for the transcript (and for asking the question!)
<George_Michael> Geri is one of the most remarkable people i have ever met...
<George_Michael> i really think that she WAS the spice girls...

FORMER SPICE GIRLS UNVEILS HER NEW LOOK
By DOMINIC MOHAN Showbiz Editor
GERI HALLIWELL unveils her fresh-faced new image with the message: "I'm happier than ever."
Gone are the flimsy micro-dresses, platform shoes and lip gloss of her raunchy Spice Girl days.
Two months after she quit the band, Geri is back - dressed in simple black, wearing very little make-up and assuming a relaxed Buddha-style pose.
Her new look, captured by Princess Diana's favourite photographer Patrick Demarchelier, makes its debut in the August issue of Marie Claire. Geri, 25, who appears on the cover, tells the magazine she is more content with her body and feels much more confident now she is free from the group.
She says: "Preparing for this shoot I thought I'd better lose weight. But then I decided I would be an absolute hypocrite if I tried to starve myself to be something I'm not.
"I'm finally learning to accept my body size. I'm at the stage in my life when I have to accept things the way they are. You should never try to be anything you're not. My body feels right, I eat right. I don't over-indulge.
"I'm happy as long as I can fit into my clothes and they're not too tight."
Geri also praises The Sun's coverage of her breast cancer scare in May.
Sexy
She says: "When The Sun found out it became an opportunity to tell women to watch out for breast cancer.
"My mum told me a ten-year-old girl read that article and found a lump. It turned out to be benign but at least the article educated her and encouraged her to do something." Although keeping in shape is not the priority it was, Geri loves being thought of as sexy.
She says: "I was called Sexy Spice obviously because of my past. If people find me sexy, that's great."
And Geri is philosophical about criticism of her singing. "It's very easy to criticise people," she says. "But life is more about people's passion rather than their ability.
"You can be the worst singer in the world or the most inarticulate speaker but it doesn't matter as long as you have heart. It's about how you project it."
COVER... August's Marie Claire is out on Friday.
Geri Flies In
FORMER Spice Girl Geri Halliwell looked a real angel as she flew from Paris to join George's birthday knees-up.
The busty singer wore a tight-fitting white dress with little wings which highlighted the star tattoo on her back.
It is the first time Geri 25, had been spotted out on town since splitting from the Spice Girls last month. [what?! Your paparazzis has been under a rock or something?! - A-K's remark]
She has been jetting round the world in a bid to escape the spotlight. But she looked refreshed and ready to party as she arrived with a female friend.
The party was held at London's Collection restaurant.

WHEN you're down in the dumps, there's no better way to spice up your life than a change of image.
Geri Halliwell, who kissed goodbye to being Ginger Spice, has settled for a makeover that will shock her fans.
The most glamorous Spice Girl of all - the cruel would say tarty - has ditched the heavy make-up, the dramatic highlights and the low-cut dresses for a totally different look.
Geri, 25, dressed in a simple and plain grey frock, was seen scraped clean of make-up yesterday on a shopping trip to Galeries Lafayette in Paris.
Perhaps she has taken the stinging criticisms of Hollywood film mogul Aaron Spelling to heart.
The producer is reported to have turned her down for a coveted role in a new Charlie's Angels movie because she was too chubby, too hard-looking - and her boobs were too big.
Geri had set her heart on playing Jill Munro, the part made famous on TV by glamorous Farrah Fawcett.
But one insider said acidly: "Geri has bulges in all the wrong places. And if she really IS 25, she's had a tough life."
Whatever the reason for Geri's dramatic change of image, the jobless Spice should have done it years ago.
Without the red lipstick and heavy blusher, fresh-faced Geri looks l8 again.
Or maybe it is the weight loss that makes her look different.
Her slimmed-down face shows no signs of that familiar double chin.
She has lost the harsh, streetwise look of a girl who modelled topless to try and make the big time.
Gone too is the cheeky look of a woman who thought nothing of pinching the backside of the heir to the throne.
Sadness
An onlooker who saw her in Paris said: "I couldn't believe it was Geri at first. She looked so different.
There seemed a certain sadness about her as she shopped alone. I hope she isn't regretting her decision to leave the Spice Girls."
Geri quit the band at the end of May - just two days before the end of the European leg of their tour and two weeks before the American concerts
started. Geri has been in the Paris since Sunday and is staying at the five-star Hotel Crillon.
But she is not just there for the shopping. While her former bandmates are delighting fans on the 40-date U.S. tour, Geri is busy trying to sort out her future.
A phone and fax has been installed in her room, where she is spending most of her time. Geri, who is there without her 24-year-old dancer boyfriend Christian Horsfall, has arranged a couple of business appointments but the deals remain a mystery.
As for her unexpected change of image, the Mirror's deputy fashion editor Jane Alexander believes the new-look Geri is a massive improvement.
She said: "Geri was beginning to look like she was wearing a mask of make-up. This very natural look makes her look sweet and gentle."
According to Smash Hits "a friend of Geri's" said that "Geri is still under contract for the next three months, so she can't do anything yet. But you'll be hearing from her very soon." They also say Geri is rumoured to start her own TV and radio production company.

GERI FOREVER . . she appears with the fab four in Viva Forever video
THE Spice Girls are transformed into metallic fairies in their new video - along with old pal Geri.
Posh, Scary, Baby and Sporty appear as animated caricatures of themselves in the video for Viva Forever, out on July 13.
Geri features in it because it was made before she quit the group last month. The video will be premiered in Miami Spice, an exclusive Spice Girls programme on Channel 4 next Monday at 6pm.
The girls are currently touring the U.S. and Emma says of Viva Forever: "This is my favourite track on the album. The song is inspired by holiday romances we've all enjoyed."
Geri will also be appearing in a new Spice Girls game for the Sony PlayStation, which should hit the stores later this month.

There are rumours that Geri is in LA to audition for the new Charlies Angels movie, however producer Aaron Spelling denies this.
June 8 1998 from MTV Europe
Geri arrived at Los Angeles airport looking very happy and waved at the photographers outside.
The rumours are high about her trying her luck in Hollywood.
June 7 1998
So, I don't think anyone really knows for sure what Geri is up to. The only thing that is confirmed is that Geri has been in discussions with BBC bosses about a possible presenting role. But the idea is still at a formative stage and it is not yet known which specific direction a TV role might take. A BBC spokeswoman confirmed: "The channels are open but there is nothing concrete."
Also, there are a number of very unconfirmed rumours....
New York Post reports that one of the producers of the Broadway show "The Life," a musical about the pimps and prostitutes who inhabited New York's Times Square before its recent clean-up (wags call the show "Orgy and Bess"), is racing across the Atlantic to offer Halliwell a leading role in the soon-to-open London production.
According to UK tabloid The Sun movie mogul Aaron Spelling's son Randy told a friend: "Geri's coming to LA later in June for several meetings about future TV and movie projects. "She's going to read for dad for the new Charlie's Angels movie. "He thinks she'd be great. She's funny, sassy and sexy - everything an angel needs to be." The 50million film begins shooting next year. A Spelling source said: "Aaron thinks Geri has terrific talents and a tremendous future."
Geri is also rumoured to be hiding out at George Michael's luxury villa in the St Tropez in the South of France.
These are some of the rumours afloat on what Geri is up to. For what she REALLY is up to, I don't think anyone knows at the moment. Also, there are rumours about the US tour with the remaining four Spice Girls. There will be no ticket refunds offered, and Geri's picture is being removed from all the advertising.
from Sky TV News, May 31 1998
Geri's solictor has made an official statement to the press at approximately 5.40 pm:
"this is a message to the fans, sadly I would like to confirm I have left the Spice Girls, this is because of differences between us. I am sure that the group will continue to be successful, and I wish them all the best. I have no immediate plans and I wish to apologise to all the fans and to thank them and everyone who's been there. Lots of love Geri. PS: I will be back" A spokesperson for the Spice Girls made this official statement:
"We are upset and saddended by Geri's departure, but we are very supportive in whatever she wants to do. The Spice Girls are here to stay, see ya at the stadiums. We are sorry to all of our fans for having to go through all this. All our love Victoria, Emma, Mel B, Mel C, friendship never ends. One final thing if I can add, and that's there is no problems with the American tour going ahead as planned"For a Real Audio file of the statements
So, there are rumours afloat that Geri is leaving the group. This might very well be true, but it's not yet confirmed by either the Spice Girls or their record company. "Sources close to the Spice Girls" and employees at Virgin is quoted as saying that Geri is leaving and that she through a lawyer informed the other girls that she never wants to sing with them again.
It is also rumoured that she wants to go into TV instead.
The other girls girls will continue without her and don't want to end as enemies and let her leave without a fight.
An official statement will be made during the weekend.
But as of now, EVERYTHING is UNconfirmed!!!
The Spice Girls were making their concert debut as a quartet after illness forced Geri Halliwell to miss the show.
Ginger Spice was forced to stay in Britain as the rest of the band flew out to Oslo, Norway, to play a sell-out show for 8,600 fans at the city's Spektrum venue.
A band spokeswoman said Geri was resting in bed to make sure she was over the stomach bug and fit to continue with the group's touring commitments.
By SEAN HOARE and VICTORIA NEWTONGeri . . . 'too sick to sing'
THE Spice Girls had a major row last night after Ginger Spice Geri Halliwell refused to sing on a live TV show.
Geri, 25, left the other four girls fuming by pulling out of the BBC's National Lottery show just hours before it was due on air.
Victoria, Mel C, Mel B and Emma spoke angrily with Geri on the phone before being forced to carry on without her and appearas a foursome for the first time.
Geri said she had stomach problems, but a band source said: "The girls were absolutely fuming.
"They see themselves as a slick, professional outfit and couldn't believe Geri pulled out.
"She was due to turn up with the others for rehearsals at 4pm, but when a car arrived at her home to collect her, she refused to go.
The other girls were told when they got to the BBC studios -but they decided to carry on without her.
"They were unusually quiet and subdued during rehearsals and hardly spoke a word to anyone - but it was clear all was not well."
As the four girls appeared on stage, Lottery show hostess Carol Smillie asked them: "Are you not missing someone tonight?" Looking slightly embarrassed, Sporty Spice Mel C replied: "Yeah, Geri - she's not well tonight." She waved her arms and added: "Hiya, Geri - get well soon."
The other girls did not comment.
The stars then went ahead with a lacklustre performance of their new single Viva Forever. They were clearly uneasy at performing as a foursome, hardly smiled and looked embarrassed.
As the girls left the BBC Television Centre, Mel C told waiting fans: "Geri's not very well. She's tired, really knackered. "She's tucked up in bed feeling ill."
Last night a spokesman for Geri insisted she pulled out because of illness. He said: "Geri was suffering from gastro-enteritis and wasn't well enough to perform."
A BBC spoksman said: "As far as we know she is unwell."
A spokesman for Lotto firm Camelot, who hoped the girls' appearance would attract a record audience for the show, said: "As far as we are concerned it is a matter for the BBC."
The Sun revealed three days ago how Geri had an emergency operation in a breast cancer scare when she was 18.
She told how she discovered a lump and believed it could be cancer. Geri revealed: "It was an absolutely hideous time."
The Spice Girls have had a record-breaking six No1 hits since storming to stardom with their first single Wannabe in July 1996.
By VICTORIA NEWTONBuxom . . . but Geri feared she might lose one of her boobs SPICE Girl Geri Halliwell had an emergency op in a breast cancer scare, she revealed last night.
Ginger Spice Geri, 25, needed surgery to cut out a small lump. She then had to wait three terrifying days to find out if the growth was malignant.
If it had been, the breast might have been removed. Geri said: "It was an absolutely hideous time."
Fortunately, the lump turned out to be be nign. Speaking for the first time about her ordeal, Geri - who wears a 36C bra - told The Sun: "I knew that if the lump was cancerous I would lose my breast.
"I've always been known for having big boobs and to have that taken away was a horrifying thought. "
The millionaire star was just 18 when she discovered the lump on her right breast.
She said: "It was a really tough time. But it made me realise how precious life is."
By VICTORIA NEWTONGERI hopes her high profile will raise thousands for the Breakthrough Breast Cancer charity.
And she and the other Spice Girls are to help the Fashion Targets Breast Cancer campaign in raising funds for the charity.
Geri, Victoria, Emma, Mel B and Mel C plan to wear Targets T-shirts on next week's Top Of The Pops when they perform their new single Viva Forever and the England World Cup song On Top Of The World.
The Fab Five - currently in the middle of a world tour - hope fans will then rush out and buy T-shirts to boost Breakthrough's funds.
Geri revealed her cancer scare to The Sun in a bid to raise awareness about the disease.
She said last night: "If by reading my story other young girls are encouraged to check their breasts and find out more about it, then it will have been worthwhile.
"I was one of the lucky ones. It could so easily have been breast cancer and my whole life would have been different."
She added: "The Spice Girls wanted to wear the T-shirts to demonstrate our support for Breakthrough and all the work they do in finding out what causes this terrible disease."
You can buy one of the T-shirts from leading high street stores, price 12.99.

Geri Halliwell is Weepy Spice
By NIGEL PAULEY, Showbiz ReporterBUSTY Geri Halliwell has got a new name Weepy Spice.
For normally self-assured Geri, Ginger Spice, looked puffy-eyed and distant at the Fab Five's sell-out gig in Scotland.
Although the Spice Girls blew the lid off Glasgow's SECC Stadium their leader didn't look on pop of the world. On their fourth number, Denying, the video monitors showed 25-year-old Geri's pained expression.
Star Rave writer Rav Singh said: "Her sad look was the talk of the crowd.
"Her eyes seemed puffy and bloodshot like she'd been crying. She seemed distracted and very unhappy."
Geri has split with city slicker boyfriend Jamie Morrison, 20. And it's been revealed raunchy pictures taken when she was a struggling model will feature in May's Playboy mag. Her teenage battle against eating disorders are also public.
GINGER Spice Geri Halliwell suffered from eating disorders when she was a teenager. Geri, now 24, was working as a club dancer. She said: "I was about 17 or 18 and I'd never thought about my figure or questioned my shape - but then a couple of the other dancers started commenting I was a bit plump.
"I went on a diet. That was the biggest mistake of my life. Diets are a trap. They are the start of a vicious circle that doesn't get you anywhere.
"I wouldn't only blame my eating problems on the pressure from society to be skinny. They're hard to understand - but problems with food can often be symptoms of your lack of self-esteem, lack of love or the desire to fill a need. Bulimia can be a result of feeling unable to express your hate, love or anger. I wouldn't like to generalise but I think all eating disorders, including anorexia, have a lot to do with control.
"If you feel that your eating patterns are becoming compulsive you should try and step out of yourself and take a look at why it's happening. The problem is often much deeper-rooted than you think. The best thing you can do is tell someone. That, in itself, is a release if you find the right person to tell.
"A lot of people don't understand it at all. They think it's easy just to eat your three meals a day but it's not that easy. You can go round and round in circles. Quick-fix diets don't work. You always end up the same weight in the end anyway. If you're worried about how good you look, I can honestly say that you're just as sexy with a bit of meat on you, as long as you're not hung up about it."
Sporty Spice Mel C admits that she too has faced problems with eating. She revealed: "At one point I got a bit compulsive about eating properly and going to the gym all the time but I've got over it. Now I believe in everything in moderation.
"Don't think I wanna be slim so the lads like me, because it's not true. We've said it so many times.lads like something to get hold of!"Read more about Geri and the other girls helping a 10 year old anorexic girl
It's quite short now! Shorter than I ever seen it!
By ALLY ROSSSPICE Girl Geri Halliwell has dumped her posh lover after a series of bust-ups, it was revealed last night.
Geri, 25, ditched polo-playing Jamie Morrison because she found him too dull, a pal claimed.
The friend said: "Geri got bored and decided to move on."
Ginger Spice and Jamie, 21 - a pal of Prince Charles - split before the girls launched their world tour in Dublin last week.
But a Spice Girls insider said they could get back together after the tour. The source added: "Geri hasn't got time for men at the moment.
"Jamie and Geri had rows, like any couple, but her incredible work schedule is the real reason behind this split."
The couple were introduced to each other by a pal of Jamie's millionaire pop promoter dad Bryan.
Geri & Jamie

By ADAM LEE-POTTER
GINGER Spice Geri Halliwell gave her new boyfriend a sizzling kiss as a consolation prize at a polo match yesterday.
Geri, 25, planted a smacker on Jamie Morrison's lips after watching him TWICE finish on the losing side.
A witness said: "There's no doubt they are in love. "They seemed to forget anyone else was there - their
hands were all over each other.
"A lot of people didn't know where to look but Jamie clearly enjoyed it."
Geri had roared encouragement from the starsd as she watched a tournament alongside 21-year-old Jamie's parents Bryan and Greta.
Then she handed out prizes to the players. including a silver tankard to Jamie, a pal of Prince Charles. The couple arrived earlier at the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club in Windsor in Jamie's flash BMW sports car.
Jamie's dad owns the £l5million club.
The onlooker added: "Geri couldn't take her eyes off Jamie when he was playing.
"She was yelling him on and jumping up and down. She's crazy about him.
"Afterwards all the other players just got a polite peck on the cheek - but when Jamie went to pick up his loser's tankard Geri flung her arms round him and kissed him full on the mouth."
Emma & Geri kissing!
from UK tabloid The Sun Saturday, December 6
Emma and Geri snog on kids TV
HERE are saucy Spice Girls Emma and Geri SNOGGING on a children's telly show.
The wacky clinch came during an interview on ITV programme Tricky.
A show insider said:
"There were tongues going in and everything. It was quite passionate.
"They started by groping each others legs then Emma started snogging Geri.
"Neither of them said they were going to or why they did it, it just all seemed so natural."
The cheeky scenes will be shown today at 9.25 am.
By the way, this isn't the first time they kiss on TV. The first time that I heard about was in October. Apparently a host at MTV Latino asked them if they kissed each other, and they said yes, and Geri showed how they do it on Emma. I never seen this, but here is what a guy who saw it said about it (pardon his English :)
"Well, when I turn on the TV, the woman ask them "You all kiss a lot of guys, and each other. Could you do it now, here?"
And then they stayed quiet for a few seconds, and Geri said: "OK, no problem, Emma, come here!"
And she got Emma's arms and kissed her. WOW!!!
The other girls said: "Yeah, that's it!".
Emma didn't understant anything, but she kissed Geri naturally.
Wow, it was impulsive, aggressive, aaaaaaahhhhhhhh.
It was on MTV Latino
I stayed really shocked, I almost cried!!
It was a strong scene...
They REALLY kissed each other, tongue one! for a few seconds... 10, I guess..."
And oh YA! If anyone got any of this on video, PLEASE contact me! I'd trade anything for it!! :)
